Perplexity: AI With a Focus on Citations
Perplexity is an AI specifically aimed at citation-backed research
The platform's focus on verification and quality sources makes it legitimately useful for research, not just generating plausible-sounding text
Following on from my article on AI hallucinations, I thought it was worth mentioning a product called Perplexity, which is specifically oriented towards accuracy and citations.
I’ve been using Perplexity for 6 months now and have found it really useful.
I gave it a query I had previously asked ChatGPT, where I was disappointed with the result because it required me to do more fact-checking than normal. In fact, I ended up reading most of an 80-page PDF to ensure I wasn't getting a bum steer. The result from Perplexity, however, was definitely more useful. I had a sense that some checking and rechecking had gone on behind the scenes before it provided the answer.
And you can see from the transcript how many citations were provided. I followed each of these and found that the references also seemed to have been provided from higher-quality sites.
It's also got this nifty feature where you can share a link to the result for other people. Here's the link for my iCare query, so you can take a look yourself.
Here is the blurb it provides on signup:
