7 Ransomware Attacks in June
Mark Belfanti (my go-to cyber expert) shared another little gem: ransomware.live - a website that searches hundreds of underground sources to uncover and publish "known" ransomware attacks.
Interestingly, seven of these were discovered in June alone in Australia. One of the victims was Victoria Racing Club (think "Melbourne Cup"). I didn't hear this covered in the press at the time, and the only mainstream source I could find was way down the search results (an article in The Age).
Mark explained that even though companies often don't want to announce the attacks themselves, the cybercriminals will post snippets of data publicly to prove that they have compromised the victims' systems — and to put pressure on their victims to pay up.
I got lost in the site for over an hour, fascinated by the level of organisation from repeat attackers. Apparently, many of these groups are run by organised crime syndicates, and some are even associated with foreign governments.
I feel like this rabbit hole has a ways to go!
